Dr Alma Swan, Director, Key Perspectives Ltd, UK:
Alma Swan has a PhD in cell biology from Southampton University and an MBA from Warwick Business School. After a lecturership at Leicester University, and senior managing editor position at Pergamon Press (later Elsevier Science), in 1996 she jointly founded the consultancy Key Perspectives Ltd, which undertakes business development and market research work in the scholarly communications arena. Alma is business strategy tutor on Warwick Business School's MBA programme, business mentor/teacher for Southampton University's School of Management, Visiting Researcher in the School of Electronics and Computer Science at Southampton University and Associate Fellow in the Marketing and Strategic Management Group at Warwick Business School. She is an elected member of the Governing Board of Euroscience (the European Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology).
Dr David Prosser, Director, SPARC Europe, UK:
David Prosser was appointed the first director of SPARC Europe (an alliance of 110 research-led university libraries from 14 European countries) in October 2002. Previously, he spent ten years in science, technical, and medical journal publishing for both Oxford University Press and Elsevier Science. During this time he was involved in all aspects of publishing from production through to editorial and financial management of journals. Before becoming a publisher he received a PhD and BSc in Physics from Leeds University, UK.
Frank Scholze, Stuttgart University, Germany:
Frank Scholze has been head of the public services department at Stuttgart University Library since 2003. He is also responsible for the Institutional Repository Software OPUS at Stuttgart University. He chairs the DINI (German Initiative for Networked Information) working group on electronic publishing. He has an MA in art history and English literature and a BSc in Library and Information Science.
Dr Astrid Wissenburg, Director of Communications and Information, Economic and Social Research Council, UK:
Astrid Wissenburg is Director of Communications and Information at the Economic and Social Research Council. Her responsibilities include strategic leadership on knowledge transfer, internal and external communications, science and society, research evaluation and e-business. Current corporate projects include the development of an internal communications and knowledge management strategy, and of an organisation-wide knowledge transfer and impact strategy (including ESRC Society Today). Astrid is also leading on behalf of Research Councils UK on open access issues.
Nick Evans, Chief Operating Officer, Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP):
Nick Evans joined the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers in January 2005. He has responsibility for delivery of all the 'member services' provided to ALPSP members, including publishing Learned Publishing journal, the ALPSP Learned Journal Collection, seminars, training, research and publications and other online information. Nick has worked in various branches of both academic and general publishing, having started his career with William Heinemann in London. Prior to joining ALPSP he worked for six years in the publication department of the International Labour Organization, a UN specialized agency, and before that with the Policy Studies Institute in London which he joined from Pan Books. He has a composer wife who also writes novels, a son who creates computer games and a daughter who works in the fine art auctioneer Christie's, so life is never dull.
The Conference will be chaired by Professor Nicholas Mann, Dean of the School of Advanced Study, University of London.
